Aalto, Alvar 1898-1976.
Finnish architect and designer. One of
Finland's first modernists, his architectural
style was unique, characterized by asymmetry,
curved walls, and contrast of natural
materials. Buildings include the Hall of
Residence, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts 1947-49;
Technical High School, Otaniemi 1962-65;
Finlandia Hall, Helsinki 1972. He also
invented a new form of laminated bent plywood
furniture in 1932.
